Benefits of Social Media

These days, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a person who isn’t on social media - it’s what connects everyone, and, quite frankly, it’s a right of passage into the 21st century. But, social media has also been a topic of discussion for a while now, and not in a good way. While it was created for all the right reasons, human nature has had its way with it more than a few times, using it for destructive purposes and spewing lies and fake news all around the world. Social media has also become another method of bullying, allowing youngsters to humiliate each other in the cruelest ways publicly. However, if one was to take all the bad, you need to take the good along with it as well - that said, here are some truly valid benefits of being on social media.

Communication

This has never been more true than it is now. During nationwide lockdowns and restrictions prohibiting everyone from setting foot outside their doors, social media has been a lifeline for many people living alone and needing some form of human interaction. Not only did it provide a platform for people from all over to interact with one another, but it lessened the feeling of isolation and gave a glimmer of light to people who might have felt like there was none.

Connection

Whether you’re connecting with your loved one who lives abroad or reconnecting with an old friend, it’s enabled through social media. Without it, losing contact with someone would be too easy, and you’d perhaps feel like keeping in touch is almost impossible. You can also connect with other people you may feel share the same story or difficulties as you. For example, suppose you were to have a mental illness that you feel your family or friends don’t really understand. In that case, you can easily go on social media, find millions of other people in the world going through the same thing, and connect with them on a level that would be of significant support to you.

Archives

Social media isn’t only a platform for people but memories as well. Think of Instagram as a digital album where you can post your favorite photos of each special occasion and be able to revisit that memory any time you’d like with a simple click of a button. And don’t worry, you can also quickly figure out how to delete posts on Instagram if you’d like to erase a particular memory later in time, but it’s all up to you! With social media, it doesn’t matter if your cell phone gets stolen or your laptop crashes and years of photos are lost with it - with social media, you’ll have those images forever.

Social media may be a dangerous weapon if not used correctly, but that shouldn’t deter anyone from still using it for all the great purposes it was invented for. After all, if you were to take all the things away that could be wielded for hurtful reasons, you’d probably have nothing left!
