Productive Note-Taking Tips for Students

Taking notes in class is crucial. Even if you know the material and have relevant texts with you, your teacher or professor will inevitably give you information that’s not in the book. Plus, taking your own notes—whether in a notebook or on your computer—helps that information stick in your brain. Read these productive note-taking tips for students and implement them the next time you’re in class. You may even find these methods more effective!

Remember the Five R’s

Remember these five easy steps when taking notes to help yourself retain information for a longer period of time:

Record: You’re probably already doing this. Write down everything you’ll need to remember during class.

Reduce: Go through your class notes and summarize the key points.

Recite: Say all those key points aloud (without peeking at your notes!).

Reflect: Engage with the material in a meaningful way. Write down any questions you have and find thoughtful answers for them as you study.

Review: Before every class period, take a few minutes to read over your previous notes so you’re ready for new material.

Keep Your Notes Organized

Chemistry formulas and English essay responses probably shouldn’t go in the same notebook. To make it easier to find your notes for any subject or unit, keep them separated. This could mean buying individual composition books for each class, keeping everything organized in folders on your computer, or splitting one larger notebook into tabbed sections. Note-taking methods can also vary from class to class, so don’t be afraid to mix and match.

Engage Yourself

Make note-taking fun, whatever that may mean to you. Some people doodle in the margins of their page, which can actually improve your recollection of the material! You can also get creative stationery that can create visual interest. If you like to color-code units or subjects, grab some highlighters. If bullet-journaling techniques keep you engaged as you jot down notes, try using a dot-grid journal for class.

For students, studying is practically a full-time job. Your teachers and professors are giving you a massive amount of information, and you must retain it. Next time you’re in class, remember these productive note-taking tips for students and notice how much more effective the process is!
