Movie Review Monday: Nebraska

Welcome to another awesome edition of Movie Review Monday!

This week's film is Nebraska (2013), starring Bruce Dern and Will Forte.

"An aging, booze-addled father makes the trip from Montana to Nebraska with his estranged son in order to claim a million-dollar Mega Sweepstakes Marketing prize."

This is the whole premise of this quirky no frills, black and white, simple movie. The focus serves the story well for the most part, but I found myself looking for more.

I usually like to showcase movies I enjoy but I was really looking forward to Nebraska due to what I knew of it and the critical acclaim. Unfortunately, the movie didn't live up to any of the hype for me. I always try to give movies nominated for the Academy Awards a chance due to their high rankings in each year's cinema (critically at least). There seems to be a continual growth in the gap between the sort of movies that most people enjoy and that resonate with people and what is nominated for most of the Academy Awards.

Nebraska is not a bad film. It has something nice to say about dignity but it could have been a short film in my opinion that had a bit more substance to it. It also had no people of color in it, and there were far better movies that came out during this movie's release.

I'd be interested to hear if others had a different opinion. I can appreciate minimalism (I'm a huge fan of the concept) but not when it comes at the price of substance.

If you'd like to see more of what I'm talking about, feel free to check out Nebraska, streaming right now on Netflix (but you may not want to sacrifice the time, and that's understandable).

Thanks for stopping by!
