What I Was Geeking Out About: May 2014

whatdoyougeekHello fellow geeks and nerds! In an ongoing effort to better serve up my delicious content to you, here is a monthly wrap-up of all my recent geek outs! Enjoy!

Have an awesome week!

What I'm Geeking Out About This Week - 05/30/14

Hello friends! Here is what I'm geeking out about this week!

I (finally) finished this bonus mission the other day, completing my time with this game that I have written much about. To say it simply, I love this game and the Bioshock universe. This final episode ties together the universe beautifully while revamping the gameplay to keep the entire thing feeling fresh. If you haven't played it yet, I recommend getting the core game, and both Burial at Sea episodes. You won't be disappointed, especially if you have played the original Bioshock (if you haven't, shame on you, and just get the PS3 version, which comes with the original game included).

Community is one of my favorite comedies of all time. It's up there with The Office and Parks & Recreation. I still rewatch old episodes and enjoy them multiple times through. The story above details the latest in the developing story of it coming back on Hulu, since there is a previous relationship there with the entire series streaming exclusively on the site. I'd be really happy to see the show just get to the pinnacle of #SixSeasonsAndAMovie that the show's avid fanbase has galvanized around. I'll be sure to post any new details as they come through.

I am a big fan of Edgar Wright. I appreciate his originality and creativity when it comes to entertainment, whether it is his early work with the TV show Spaced, his cult favorite film Shaun of the Dead, or one of my favorite movies of all time, Scott Pilgrim VS The World. I looked forward to what unique qualities he would bring to a big Marvel Studios movie, but alas, they did not seem to share that optimism. I'll be interested to see where this project goes and if it turns out to be a success in the end.

Keep on geeking on & have a great weekend!

What I'm Geeking Out About This Week - 05/23/14

whatdoyougeekHey everyone! Here is my week in geek!

I'm getting more excited for this movie as the buzz becomes overwhelmingly positive. It is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes (click above) with impressive marks from critics and audiences alike. I was worried it was going to be too busy and fall under its own weight (like Amazing Spider-Man 2 started to do), but this movie seems to get the complex story right. I'll be seeing it this weekend so I look forward to sharing more detailed thoughts later.

  • Graduation

I just have to share briefly this milestone (which I'll delve into deeper with a separate post) that I recently graduated with my Master's of Education in College Student Affairs from Rutgers University. It was the final ceremony for a week full of good vibes with convocations and commencements for myself and my partner. It is always really great seeing excited graduates and proud families at all of these events. Never fails to put a smile on my face! Cheers to all the other graduates out there this year!

So I was originally born in Maine but I consider myself more from Delaware, since I grew up there for 20+ years. I went to school there (college included), made a lot of memories there, and always like to go back when I can to either visit my brother or swing by the University of Delaware. My partner and I had the great idea to take a long weekend down here for my birthday and our graduations, so I am currently enjoying some sun by the beach in Delaware. I got to see my Mom (who is visiting from Maine) and my brother, which is a rare treat and I am very happy! I encourage you all to check out the "First State" and let me know if you need some recommendations. It is a small but mighty state that I know you'd have a good time at if you're looking for a quiet, relaxing time away.

Thanks for stopping by! Have a great weekend!

What I'm Geeking Out About This Week - 05/16/14

whatdoyougeekHowdy y'all! Welcome to a television centric iteration of what I'm geeking out about. With all of our favorite shows wrapping up for the season, I wanted to highlight some gems I enjoyed this week.

  • Agents of SHIELD Season 1

This show has been much debated in the nerd circles since it had a lot to live up to. I feel like it has finally found its footing late in its first season, and is in a good place moving forward. The characters are being developed a bit more, the action is always on point, and the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe is being pulled in more. I would personally like to see more super-powered antics on the show, but as long as they keep with solid character stuff, I'll be satisfied. Looking forward to what the second season has to offer!

  • Arrow Season 2

With a solid season under its belt already, Arrow has definitely found its way even more this past year. While no show is perfect, and Arrow has its faults, it is consistently awesome, which is more than I can say for other shows lately (ahem, New Girl). I feel as though this show would have been amazing with a shorter episode order to keep the story concise, but even so, I'm very engaged with this show every week and appreciate the universe they're building within their own show, and even to spinoffs. Which reminds me...

...The Flash just dropped an extended trailer (click above). It looks really good and I am convinced Grant Gustin will make a great Barry Allen. It looks like this show will bring in more of the super-powers Arrow has been lacking, as well as all of the same great stuff that makes Arrow awesome. I also appreciate the sort of mentoring going on between Arrow and The Flash eluded to in the trailer. I can't wait for some team up, crossover episodes in the future! Also, we need these two in the darn Justice League movie!

That is all for this week. Thanks for stopping by everyone and enjoy your weekend!

What I'm Geeking Out About This Week - 05/09/14

Geek-and-proudHello and welcome to another week of awesome geek outs. This week, I chose to highlight some current events that I wanted to provide some commentary on and keep the discussion going.

This story broke a few days ago and essentially involved the company, Black Milk Clothing, botching the response to a distasteful picture that held to the old nerd stereotype that we're all ugly and unfashionable. They could have just apologized and took the photo down but instead, Black Milk engaged with their audience trying to defend their post and never took down the photo that people found to be offensive. Check out the post for the full saga but it just reaffirmed my support for the nerd community that we still have to put up with this sort of behavior that makes us feel ashamed for being into all the awesome stuff we enjoy. We'll just have to keep fighting the good fight it looks like.

I've seen this social media campaign gaining some steam lately, which focuses on the effort to find missing Nigerian girls who were kidnapped last month. The story blew up when it was discovered the likely fate of these girls; sex trafficking. The entire world is getting behind the effort to support finding them before it is too late, even First Lady Michelle Obama (click above). I'm always proud of the potential of social media in times like this, when a global community is formed behind a single cause.

I've been chronicling my own job search for a series of posts over at The Student Affairs Collective, and it has been a rough few months. Between the stress of a gauntlet of interviews, the travel, and the anxiety of not hearing back while others are accepting offers, it has been hard for me and I know a great deal of the chaos is due to the hiring practices of colleges and universities. A large gap is the lack of communication. This article goes into this and it is just the simple gesture of keeping the candidates informed of what is going on rather than letting them come up with their own worst-case scenarios in their minds to torture themselves with. I understand it is a busy time for everyone but we could a lot better with how the "process" we're all supposed to trust is run.

Thanks for stopping by and have an awesome weekend!

What I Was Geeking Out About: April 2014

Hail good geeks and nerds! I had another month of fantastic geek outs in April. Check out the lists of everything below!

Let that geek flag fly, my friends!

What I'm Geeking Out About This Week - 05/02/14

Geek-and-proudHey folks! Check out this cinematically focused week in geek:

I was checking out an anticipated list of Summer 2014 movies recently, and it dawned on me (see what I did there?!) that this movie is coming out in a few months. It hasn't gotten a lot of press since X-Men and Spider-Man have been dominating lately, but I am really looking forward to this movie. The first film was a dark horse that surprised everyone and I was a huge fan. I am very eager to see where they take the story further.

Needless to say I am very excited for this movie. I'm a huge Spidey fan and all the stuff I've seen looks pretty great. I do worry that I have seen like all of the movie from all the promo images and trailers but I am sure there is still great stuff I haven't seen yet. I'm going to see it this weekend sometime so check out my tweets to get my immediate thoughts.

So the new cast was announced recently and as I reflected on the reveal, I am still maintaining my initial thoughts on the possibility of this new proposed trilogy; cautiously optimistic. The cast as it stands now had a severe lack of female actors in it and I was never committed to the need for the original trilogy cast to be involved. I'm happy to have them passing the torch but it still feels like they are shoehorned in somehow without knowing exactly the story they want to tell. There is so much potential here but there is also the chance for another prequel trilogy that is divisive and becomes just a cash grab. We'll see what comes from all this as the months go on.

Thanks for stopping by! Come back next week for more geeky awesomeness. Have a great weekend!

What I'm Geeking Out About This Week - 04/25/14

Geek-and-proud Good tidings to you all! Thanks for stopping by.

Here are some things that I've been geeking out on recently:

So my partner and I just watched a bunch of episodes of this new show after we had both been nudged by multiple people to check it out. We were definitely impressed. It's strongly narrative driven and has a nice dose of sci-fi to keep me hooked. All of the first season is available on Amazon Prime right now and the second season just premiered recently so jump in now since there isn't too much to catch up on.

I just started reading this book since I felt like I needed it. It had been sitting in my Amazon wishlist for some time after an offhand reference by someone peaked my interest. I'm about a third of the way in and it has some powerful advice as well as actionable takeaways to help you live a more zen life. I'm enjoying what it has to say since I'm always all about slowing down and reducing the noise in my life, now this book is helping me maximize to truly achieve that goal.

I'm a big fan of TOMS shoes. I've blogged about them before in varying capacities but just for the record, I own two pairs and their stickers are posted in a few different places around my apartment. They make good products and do good for the world. I couldn't really ask for too much more. I'm going to commit to doing the Day Without Shoes which is next Tuesday, April 29. Even if you can't participate on your own all day, just going for as long as you can as an awareness effort all helps the cause. Look forward to some posts and pictures from the day from me!

Check back every Friday for more awesome geek outs!

Take care and enjoy your weekend!
